Columbia

Located roughly 46 miles south of Nashville, on the Duck River, and in the heart of Maury County, Columbia has the feel of a large small town. Its historic town square features a picturesque courthouse surrounded on four sides by shops, food options, and offices. Rolling hills and fields can be found around Columbia, and the Duck River is popular for canoeing and tubing on hot summer days. Columbia offers the best of small town living and features friendly people, a somewhat slower pace of life, and a strong sense of community. Like the rest of middle Tennessee, Columbia has grown in recent years. Nonetheless, Columbia real estate prices are generally more affordable than those in neighboring Williamson County, and taxes are lower than those in Nashville, too.

BEST KNOWN FOR

Mule Day. During the first World War, Columbia bred and trained mules for use by the military, and an annual mule auction was held on the square. That history has evolved into an annual festival with food, concerts, and other family-friendly events.

THE THINGS WE LOVE

1. The town square. Columbia’s historic courthouse is in the center of the town square, surrounded by shops, food options, and government offices. We recommend having a meal at Puckett’s and grabbing desert at Pie Sensations, both on the square.

2. Riverwalk Park. Columbia is located along the Duck River, and its river walk is a paved path leading from downtown Columbia to a local dam, roughly a mile away. The park has various events throughout the year.

ONE NEGATIVE

Distance from Nashville. If you work downtown, your daily commute to Columbia would be lengthy. Columbia is 46 miles from Nashville, meaning your daily commute would likely be an hour or more each way in rush hour. Columbia is much more convenient to Maury and Williamson County locations.

FAVORITE SHOP

Pie Sensations. This may be the best pie shop we have ever visited. Located on the Columbia Square, Pie Sensations was named the best Pie in Nashville in 2019 and was Rated #1 in Paula Deen’s Pies Across America.
